Steam Boosts Stadia Controller Support as Bluetooth Conversion Deadline Nears

Steam Enhances Stadia Controller Support Amid Impending Deadline

In a significant development for gaming enthusiasts, Steam has recently enhanced its support for the Google Stadia Controller, offering a more seamless integration as the deadline for converting these controllers to Bluetooth mode approaches.

The Stadia Controller, originally designed for Google’s now-defunct cloud gaming service, has found a new lease on life through these updates. Previously, users had to enable support for generic controllers within Steam to use the Stadia Controller. Now, the controller connects and functions without this additional step, simplifying the user experience. Although it still appears as a Generic Gamepad within the interface, its functionality has been notably improved.

Key enhancements include:

– Programmable Macro Button: The Google Assistant key can now be customized to perform various functions, allowing users to tailor their gaming experience.

– Screenshot Capability: The screenshot button is now operational, enabling players to capture in-game moments directly through SteamOS.

– Enhanced Navigation: The Stadia button now mirrors the functionality of an Xbox controller’s home button, facilitating access to Steam’s Big Picture mode and SteamOS shortcuts.

Despite these improvements, certain features remain unsupported. For instance, the controller does not automatically power off when connected to SteamOS, and the 3.5mm headphone jack does not transmit audio. Additionally, haptic feedback (rumble) is not functional over Bluetooth connections. Users should also note that the Stadia Controller icons are not displayed within the Steam interface.

This update arrives as the deadline to convert Stadia Controllers to Bluetooth mode looms. Google introduced a web-based tool to facilitate this conversion, initially setting a cutoff date of December 31, 2023. This deadline was subsequently extended to the end of 2024 and then again to December 31, 2025. As of now, there is no confirmation of further extensions. Therefore, owners of unconverted Stadia Controllers are encouraged to utilize the conversion tool promptly to ensure continued usability.

The Stadia Controller’s journey from a proprietary device to a versatile gaming accessory underscores the dynamic nature of the gaming industry and the importance of adaptability in technology.
