Peter Diamandis Launches $3.5M Future Vision XPRIZE for Optimistic Sci-Fi Narratives

Peter Diamandis Unveils $3.5 Million Future Vision XPRIZE to Inspire Optimistic Sci-Fi Narratives

Peter Diamandis, the visionary founder of XPRIZE, has announced the launch of the $3.5 million Future Vision XPRIZE, aiming to inspire filmmakers to create science fiction narratives that depict a hopeful and technologically harmonious future. This initiative seeks to counteract the prevailing trend of dystopian themes in contemporary sci-fi media.

Diamandis attributes his illustrious career to the influence of Star Trek, a series that presented an optimistic vision of humanity’s future intertwined with technological advancement. He recalls, ‘Star Trek’ offered a hopeful vision of the future, right? It was humans/humanity and technology in collaboration. I truly credit it with everything that I since achieved, because it motivated me to want to go and create and manifest that future.

Observing a surge in dystopian narratives in modern science fiction, Diamandis expressed concern over the negative portrayal of technology. He noted, Every science fiction movie I was seeing painted this dystopian vision of the future. It was always, everything is going wrong, and it’s a result of technology. You know, killer robots, dystopian AIs. It’s ‘Black Mirror.’ It’s ‘Terminator.’ It’s ‘Ex Machina.’ Why would you ever want to live in that future?

To bring this vision to life, Diamandis collaborated with notable figures such as Rod Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry; Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce; Cathie Wood, CEO of Ark Invest; and partners at Google. Together, they are sponsoring the Future Vision XPRIZE, a competition designed to encourage filmmakers to craft stories that showcase the positive potential of technology in shaping our future.

Diamandis emphasized the importance of presenting optimistic futures, especially in times of uncertainty. He stated, Right now, there’s a huge amount of growing uncertainty in people’s lives. Will my kids have a job? Will I have a job? He believes that by envisioning and portraying positive outcomes, society can be motivated to realize them.

The competition invites filmmakers to submit three-minute trailers that depict a future where technology and humanity coexist beneficially. Submissions open on March 9 and close on August 15, with winners announced on September 25. The grand prize includes $2.5 million in production funding towards developing a feature film and a $100,000 cash prize. Additionally, the winning project is expected to be featured on the crowdsourcing site Republic Film to help raise an additional $5 million to $10 million for its production budget.

Diamandis encourages participants to utilize AI tools in their creative process but cautions against fully AI-generated submissions. He advises, I don’t want an AI-generated script and an AI-generated film without the human. The humanity of it all is really important.

The Future Vision XPRIZE is conducted in partnership with the 100 ZEROS initiative, a collaboration between Google and production company Range Media Partners. This initiative works with filmmakers to produce tech-inspired stories using Google’s tools, such as the video generation model Veo and the video creation tool Flow.

Diamandis’s Abundance community of CEOs has also contributed nearly half of the prize money, demonstrating a collective commitment to fostering narratives that inspire a positive technological future.
