OpenAI Begins US Rollout of Ads in ChatGPT, Faces Criticism and Rival Campaigns

OpenAI’s Strategic Approach to Integrating Ads in ChatGPT

In January 2026, OpenAI announced plans to introduce advertisements within the free and Go tiers of ChatGPT, aiming to enhance the platform’s sustainability while maintaining user trust. The rollout commenced in the United States earlier this month, coinciding with competitive responses from industry rivals.

During the India AI Summit, OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, elaborated on the company’s methodical approach to this integration. He emphasized that the process would be iterative, focusing on preserving user trust and ensuring privacy. Lightcap stated, This is something we are committed to getting right. It means obviously maintaining user trust at a very high level. It means getting privacy right.

Lightcap also highlighted the potential for well-executed ads to enhance the user experience, suggesting that, when done correctly, advertisements could be additive rather than intrusive. He urged users to allow a few months to assess the effectiveness of this integration, indicating that the company is in the early stages of this endeavor.

The decision to incorporate ads has not been without controversy. Competitor Anthropic launched a series of Super Bowl advertisements criticizing OpenAI’s move. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed these critiques on social media platform X, labeling Anthropic’s campaign as dishonest and accusing them of creating an expensive product that primarily serves affluent users. Altman emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to providing free AI access, stating, We believe everyone deserves to use AI and are committed to free access, because we believe access creates agency.

Reports have surfaced indicating that OpenAI is charging $60 for 1,000 ad impressions, a rate considered high within the industry. Additionally, Adweek noted that OpenAI is seeking a minimum commitment of $200,000 from advertisers. The Information reported that Shopify is enabling its merchants to advertise on ChatGPT through its Shop Campaigns ad network, joining early testers like Target, Williams Sonoma, and Adobe.

As OpenAI navigates this new revenue model, the company remains focused on balancing monetization with user experience. The iterative approach underscores a commitment to refining the integration of advertisements, ensuring they contribute positively to the platform without compromising user trust or privacy.
