Mozilla Introduces One-Click Control to Disable AI Features in Firefox
In a significant move to empower user choice, Mozilla has unveiled a new control feature in its Firefox desktop browser, allowing users to disable generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) functionalities with a single click. This development underscores Mozilla’s commitment to user autonomy and privacy in the evolving digital landscape.
Ajit Varma, head of Firefox, emphasized the importance of this feature, stating, It provides a single place to block current and future generative AI features in Firefox. You can also review and manage individual AI features if you choose to use them. This lets you use Firefox without AI while we continue to build AI features for those who want them.
Mozilla’s journey into integrating AI began in November 2025, with a clear stance that such features would be entirely opt-in, ensuring users remain in control. The upcoming Firefox 148 release, scheduled for February 24, 2026, will introduce this AI control feature, enabling users to manage specific settings, including:
– Translations: Manage AI-driven language translation services.
– Alt Text in PDFs: Add accessibility descriptions to images within PDF documents.
– AI-Enhanced Tab Grouping: Receive suggestions for related tabs and group names.
– Link Previews: View key points before opening a link.
– AI Chatbot in the Sidebar: Utilize popular chatbots like Anthropic Claude, OpenAI ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral while browsing.
Mozilla’s proactive approach reflects its dedication to user choice amidst the increasing integration of AI in web browsers. Varma further noted, If you don’t want to use AI features from Firefox at all, you can turn on the Block AI enhancements toggle. When it’s toggled on, you won’t see pop-ups or reminders to use existing or upcoming AI features.
This initiative aligns with the vision of Mozilla’s CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, who emphasized the company’s focus on becoming a trusted software provider that prioritizes user agency. Enzor-DeMeo stated, Privacy, data use, and AI must be clear and understandable. Controls must be simple. AI should always be a choice – something people can easily turn off.
Mozilla’s commitment to user privacy and control is evident in its recent actions. In March 2025, the company updated its Terms of Use following feedback over broad data license language, reinforcing its dedication to transparency and user trust. Additionally, in July 2023, Mozilla introduced the Quarantined Domains feature, blocking certain add-ons on specific websites to enhance user security.
