Instagram to Discontinue End-to-End Encryption in Direct Messages by May 2026
In a recent and understated update to its Help Center, Meta has announced that end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging will no longer be available on Instagram after May 8, 2026. Users who have utilized this feature are advised to export their encrypted chats before the specified date.
Meta’s official statement attributes this decision to low user adoption rates. A company spokesperson explained, Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months. Anyone who wants to keep messaging with E2EE can easily do that on WhatsApp.
End-to-end encryption is a security measure that ensures messages are encrypted on the sender’s device and can only be decrypted by the recipient’s device. This means that neither Meta nor any potential interceptors can access the content of these messages, providing a high level of privacy for users.
Despite the significant privacy benefits, the E2EE feature on Instagram was not enabled by default. Users had to manually activate it within their chat settings. This lack of default activation likely contributed to the low adoption rates cited by Meta.
Matthew Green, a cryptographer and professor at Johns Hopkins University, highlighted this issue on social media. He pointed out that Meta had previously committed to implementing E2EE as a default setting on Instagram. In 2022, the company even conducted a human rights impact assessment, concluding that expanding end-to-end encryption supports various fundamental human rights.
The decision to remove E2EE from Instagram’s direct messaging service raises concerns about user privacy and data security. While Meta suggests that users seeking encrypted messaging can turn to WhatsApp, this move may be seen as a step back in the company’s commitment to user privacy on all its platforms.
As the May 2026 deadline approaches, users who have relied on Instagram’s encrypted messaging feature should take steps to export their chats to preserve their private conversations.
