Meta Expands AI Translation for Reels to Include Hindi and Portuguese

Meta has broadened the linguistic capabilities of its AI-driven translation feature for Reels on Instagram and Facebook by incorporating support for Hindi and Portuguese. This enhancement aims to enable creators from major markets like India and Brazil to connect with a more diverse global audience.

Initially introduced in August with support for English and Spanish, the AI translation feature allows users to automatically translate Reels into different languages, thereby facilitating cross-cultural engagement. By adding Hindi and Portuguese, Meta seeks to empower creators to reach audiences who may not share the same native language.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, We believe there are lots of amazing creators out there who have potential audiences who don’t necessarily speak the same language. And if we can help you reach those audiences who speak other languages, reach across cultural and linguistic barriers, we can help you grow your following and get more value out of Instagram and the platform.

To utilize this feature, creators can activate the Translate your voice with Meta AI option before publishing their Reels. This function enables automatic dubbing and lip-syncing in the selected language, ensuring that the translated content maintains the original tone and style of the creator’s voice. Users can review and approve the translations before sharing their content, ensuring accuracy and authenticity.

Meta is also developing additional features to enhance the translation experience. One such feature will allow for the translation of text or caption stickers within Reels. Users will have the option to select Translate text on Reels, making it easier for viewers to understand all elements of the content, including on-screen text.

Furthermore, Meta plans to extend multi-speaker AI-powered translations to Instagram, a feature currently available on Facebook. This advancement will enable more dynamic and inclusive content creation, accommodating conversations involving multiple speakers in different languages.

The expansion of AI translation features aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to foster global connectivity and inclusivity. By breaking down language barriers, Meta aims to create a more interconnected digital community where creators can share their stories and ideas with audiences worldwide, regardless of linguistic differences.
