Material 3 Expressive Enhances Wear OS Tiles with Rounded Design Elements

Google is progressively introducing the Material 3 Expressive (M3E) design language to Wear OS applications, notably updating Tiles to feature UI elements that conform to the round contours of smartwatch displays. This design shift includes arc-shaped buttons positioned along the screen’s perimeter, providing larger touch targets and a more cohesive visual experience.

A Pixel Watch user recently observed these design changes in the Google Calendar Wear OS Tiles, specifically the Next event and Next tasks features. The previous design utilized smaller, pill-shaped buttons, whereas the updated version adopts larger, arc-shaped buttons that align with the watch’s circular display. This enhancement not only improves aesthetics but also usability by offering more accessible touchpoints.

The Google Calendar app for Wear OS was updated to version 2025.18.1, incorporating these design modifications. However, the rollout appears to be gradual, with some users not yet seeing the changes, indicating a phased deployment.

Material 3 Expressive is set to debut on the Pixel Watch later this year, with ongoing app updates reflecting this new design philosophy. The M3E design emphasizes embracing the round form factor of smartwatches, enhancing both visual appeal and user interaction.
