Lucid Air Owners to Access Tesla Supercharger Network Starting July 31

Starting July 31, 2025, Lucid Air owners will gain access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network across North America. This development follows an agreement between Lucid Motors and Tesla, aiming to enhance charging options for Lucid’s luxury electric sedan customers.

Access Details and Adapter Requirements

To utilize the Supercharger network, Lucid Air vehicles, regardless of their model year, will require a specific adapter priced at $220. This adapter enables compatibility with Tesla’s V3 and newer Supercharger stations. However, due to differences in charging architectures, Lucid Airs will experience a maximum charging rate of 50 kW at these stations, significantly lower than the 250 kW peak rate available to Tesla vehicles. This limitation arises from the mismatch between Lucid’s 924-volt charging system and Tesla’s 400-volt Superchargers. Lucid engineers have adapted the Air’s integrated charging system, known as the Wunderbox, to facilitate this 50 kW charging capability when connected to a Supercharger. While this rate is slower compared to other charging options, it provides an additional resource for Lucid Air owners during road trips or when Superchargers are more conveniently located.

Lucid’s Transition to NACS and Future Models

Unlike the Lucid Gravity SUV, which launched earlier this year with a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, the Air continues to utilize the Combined Charging System (CCS). The CCS has been a prevalent EV charging standard in North America, adopted by most automakers except Tesla, which developed its proprietary charging standard. In 2022, Tesla shared its EV charging connector design to encourage broader adoption of its technology, aiming to establish it as the new standard in North America. Following this initiative, several automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Rivian, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota, have reached agreements with Tesla to integrate the NACS into their future EV models. Lucid was among the later companies to finalize such a deal. Consequently, its upcoming Gravity SUV is equipped with a native NACS port, allowing direct access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without the need for an adapter.

Implications for Lucid Air Owners

The integration of Tesla Supercharger access for Lucid Air owners marks a significant step in expanding charging infrastructure availability. Despite the reduced charging speed, the ability to utilize Tesla’s widespread Supercharger network offers increased convenience and flexibility for Lucid Air drivers. This move reflects a broader industry trend towards standardizing charging interfaces to enhance the electric vehicle ownership experience.
