After nearly three weeks with the new iPhone Air, its design and functionality continue to impress. A particularly noteworthy aspect is its screen size, which has proven to be exactly what I had hoped for.
A Longstanding Preference for Compact iPhones
While market trends indicate a strong consumer preference for larger smartphones, I have consistently favored more compact devices. Residing in the bustling, pedestrian-friendly environment of New York City, the ability to operate my phone with one hand is essential. This necessity has steered me away from Apple’s larger iPhone models over the years.
Historically, I have opted for the smaller Pro models, including the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro. The iPhone 12 mini was an exception; its diminutive size was a perfect fit for my hand. However, the allure of Pro-exclusive features led me to transition to the iPhone 13 Pro the following year.
The iPhone 16 Pro’s increase in screen size from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches was not particularly appealing to me, as I preferred the previous dimensions. Despite this, I decided to try the iPhone Air, which boasts a 6.5-inch display. The combination of a larger screen with an ultra-thin design has proven to be a winning formula.
The iPhone Air’s Screen Size: A Perfect Fit
Initial rumors about the iPhone Air suggested that its slim profile might offset the challenges typically associated with larger screens. This speculation has been confirmed in my experience. From the outset, the larger display has been an asset rather than a drawback. This is a stark contrast to my reaction to the iPhone 16 Pro’s size increase, which I found less favorable.
The ultra-thin design of the iPhone Air facilitates comfortable one-handed use, a crucial factor for me. Comparing the dimensions of my previous iPhone 16 Pro and the new iPhone Air highlights this point:

Instead, it fits comfortably in my hand.
While a smaller screen would still be my ideal choice, the iPhone Air’s design offers a commendable compromise. The upcoming iPhone Fold, which promises a compact form when folded and a larger display when unfolded, is an exciting prospect. For now, the iPhone Air’s 6.5-inch screen size serves as a solid middle ground.
For users accustomed to the Pro Max models, the iPhone Air’s screen size is comparable to the traditional 6.7-inch displays, making it a viable alternative. Alongside its impressive battery life and durability, the iPhone Air’s screen size stands out as a significant advantage.
