Google’s Gemini App Launches AI-Driven Music Creation with DeepMind’s Lyria 3 Model

Google Enhances Gemini App with AI-Powered Music Generation

Google has unveiled a groundbreaking feature in its Gemini app, introducing AI-driven music generation capabilities powered by DeepMind’s Lyria 3 model. This innovative addition allows users to craft unique musical compositions by simply describing their desired song. For example, a prompt like a comical R&B slow jam about a sock finding its match will yield a 30-second track complete with lyrics and cover art created by Nano Banana.

Beyond text prompts, users can upload photos or videos, enabling the AI to generate music that aligns with the mood of the media file. Lyria 3 represents a significant advancement over its predecessors, producing more realistic and intricate music tracks. Users have the flexibility to adjust elements such as style, vocals, and tempo to tailor the output to their preferences.

In addition to integrating Lyria 3 into the Gemini app, Google is expanding its reach by making the model available to YouTube creators through the Dream Track feature. Previously limited to U.S. creators, this tool now has a global footprint, assisting content creators worldwide in producing AI-generated tracks.

To address concerns about originality and copyright, Google has implemented measures to prevent the direct imitation of existing artists. If a user includes an artist’s name in their prompt, Gemini will generate a track inspired by the artist’s style or mood without replicating their work. Google emphasizes that Lyria 3 is designed for original expression, not for mimicking existing artists. Prompts mentioning specific artists will serve as broad creative inspiration, resulting in tracks that share a similar style or mood. Filters are in place to check outputs against existing content to ensure originality.

To maintain transparency, all songs created with Lyria 3 will feature a SynthID watermark, identifying them as AI-generated content. Furthermore, Google is enhancing Gemini’s capabilities to detect AI-generated music. Users can upload tracks and inquire whether they are AI-generated, promoting transparency and authenticity in the music creation process.

The music generation feature is being rolled out to all Gemini users aged 18 and above across the globe, supporting languages including English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.

The advent of AI-generated music has elicited mixed reactions from artists and listeners alike. While platforms like YouTube and Spotify are embracing AI and collaborating with music labels to monetize AI-generated content, the music industry has raised concerns over copyright issues related to the training material used by AI models. In response, platforms such as Deezer have developed tools to mark AI-generated music, aiming to curb fraudulent streams and maintain the integrity of the music industry.
