Google has commenced the rollout of the December 2025 update for its Pixel Watch series, introducing Wear OS 6.1 based on Android 16. This update is available for Pixel Watch models 2, 3, and 4, encompassing both Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE variants. Notably, the original Pixel Watch will remain on Wear OS 5.1 and will not receive this update.
This release follows the October update that introduced Wear OS 6 and marks the first post-launch update for the Pixel Watch 4. Users can initiate the update by navigating to Settings > System > System updates and tapping the Your watch is up to date screen multiple times. To expedite the process, it’s recommended to disable Bluetooth under Connectivity preferences, thereby forcing the update over Wi-Fi.
In conjunction with this update, the Pixel Watch 4 is currently discounted by $50 on the Google Store and other retailers, including Amazon.
Google has transitioned to a quarterly update schedule for Wear OS on Pixel Watches. However, new features are also introduced via the Play Store. Recently, the Now Playing feature received always-on display (AOD) support, alongside enhancements to the Stopwatch and Timer applications. With the current OS update, AOD Media Controls are now fully operational.
The update introduces new Double Pinch and Wrist Turn gestures, which are enabled by default. Users can manage these gestures by navigating to Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures, where they can also control UI hints. An upcoming feature will allow users to answer and end calls using the Double Pinch gesture. Currently, these gestures can be used to scroll through alerts, send the first Smart Reply, manage timers and stopwatches, snooze alarms, play or pause music, and even snap photos.
Additionally, the Bedtime mode icon in Quick Settings has been updated from a moon to an actual bed, providing a more intuitive visual cue.
The Flashlight and Settings app icons have been refreshed to align with the Pixel’s blue/purple gradient aesthetic, offering a more cohesive visual experience.
Version 4.2 of the Pixel Watch companion app is also being widely rolled out. This update introduces a new Watch Screenshots folder, eliminating the need for temporary notifications when capturing screenshots.
In summary, the December 2025 update for Pixel Watch models 2, 3, and 4 brings Wear OS 6.1, introducing new gestures, enhanced always-on display features, refreshed app icons, and improvements to the companion app. Users are encouraged to update their devices to take advantage of these enhancements.
