Google Introduces Call Recording Feature to Pixel Phones
Google has officially launched the Call Recording feature for Pixel smartphones, enhancing the functionality of the Phone app. This update is particularly beneficial for users whose devices do not support the AI-driven Call Notes feature.
Accessing Call Recording:
To utilize this new feature, navigate to the Phone app and select ‘Settings.’ Within the ‘Call Assist’ section, you’ll find the ‘Call Recording’ option. Upon first use, the app will prompt you to download necessary audio files to enable recording capabilities. Google emphasizes that all recordings are stored locally on your device, ensuring user privacy.
Initiating a Recording:
During a call, access the ‘Call Assist’ menu, located adjacent to the ‘Audio Emoji’ option. Here, you’ll find the ‘Call Recording’ button. Activating this initiates a brief countdown, followed by an audible notification to all participants that the call is being recorded. A red dot will appear next to the call duration indicator, signifying that recording is in progress. To stop recording, simply revisit the ‘Call Assist’ menu and select ‘Stop.’
Managing Recordings:
Post-call, your recordings are accessible in the ‘Home’ tab of the Phone app, denoted by a microphone icon. Expanding this entry reveals the M3 Expressive audio player for playback. Within the ‘Call Recording’ settings, users can:
– Enable or Disable Call Recording: A master switch allows you to turn the feature on or off.
– Set Auto-Deletion Preferences: Choose to have recordings automatically deleted after 7, 14, or 30 days, or opt to retain them indefinitely.
– Manage Automatic Recording: Configure the app to automatically record calls from non-contacts or specify particular numbers for automatic recording.
Device Compatibility:
The Call Recording feature is available on Pixel 6 and newer models running Android 14 or later. This includes Pixel 9 and subsequent models that do not support the AI-powered Call Notes functionality. To access this feature, ensure your Phone app is updated to version 198 or later.
Global Expansion of Call Notes:
In addition to the Call Recording rollout, Google’s November 2025 Pixel Feature Drop has expanded the availability of the Call Notes feature to users in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and Japan. Call Notes offers advanced capabilities such as transcription, summaries, and actionable insights, further enhancing the communication experience for Pixel users.
