Google’s Quick Share to Expand AirDrop-Like Functionality Across Android Devices
Google is set to broaden the reach of its AirDrop-style file-sharing feature, Quick Share, to a wider array of Android smartphones in 2026. Initially exclusive to the Pixel 10 series, this expansion aims to enable seamless file transfers between Android devices and Apple products, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.
Expansion Beyond Pixel Devices
During a press briefing in Taipei, Eric Kay, Google’s Vice President of Engineering for Android, announced plans to extend Quick Share’s AirDrop compatibility to numerous Android devices this year. Kay highlighted that the previous year was dedicated to ensuring the feature’s reliable performance across Apple hardware. Following successful testing, Google has been collaborating with Android partners to integrate this capability into the broader ecosystem, with forthcoming announcements anticipated.
To facilitate this expansion, Google transitioned the Quick Share Extension from a Pixel-specific system feature to a standalone application available on the Play Store. This strategic move transforms AirDrop support into a platform-wide feature, simplifying its adoption across various Android devices.
Once the rollout is complete, Android users from different manufacturers will be able to share files directly with Apple devices without the need for additional applications or cables. This development addresses one of Apple’s longstanding ecosystem advantages by promoting cross-platform compatibility.
Notably, companies like Nothing have publicly confirmed their efforts to incorporate this feature, and Qualcomm has indicated that Snapdragon-powered phones will support AirDrop-like sharing capabilities.
Simplifying Device Transitions
In addition to enhancing file-sharing capabilities, Google has expressed intentions to streamline data transfers for users transitioning from iOS to Android. While specific details remain undisclosed, the overarching goal is to foster smoother interoperability between Android and iOS platforms, facilitating not only file sharing but also comprehensive device migrations.
