Google Chrome Enhances Autofill to Include Passports, Driver’s Licenses, and Vehicle Registrations
In a significant update, Google has expanded Chrome’s autofill capabilities to encompass personal identification details such as passports, driver’s licenses, and vehicle registrations. This enhancement builds upon Chrome’s existing features that automatically populate addresses, passwords, and payment information, streamlining the online experience for users.
Desktop users with enhanced autofill enabled will now find that Chrome can automatically input their passport numbers, driver’s license details, and vehicle information—including license plate numbers and Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs)—when prompted on web forms. This advancement is particularly beneficial for tasks like booking travel, completing official forms, or managing vehicle-related services online.
Google has also improved Chrome’s ability to interpret complex forms and diverse formatting requirements, ensuring greater accuracy across various websites. This means that even intricate or uniquely structured forms will benefit from the enhanced autofill functionality, reducing the likelihood of errors and saving users time.
Security and user consent remain paramount. Chrome will only save autofill data with explicit user permission and will protect this sensitive information through robust encryption methods. Additionally, before autofilling any saved information, Chrome will prompt users for confirmation, adding an extra layer of security and control.
These updates are being rolled out globally in all languages starting this week. Google has indicated plans to support even more data types in the coming months, further enhancing the browser’s utility.
This development comes as part of Google’s broader efforts to enhance Chrome’s functionality amid the rise of new AI-powered browsers. Recently, Google introduced Gemini in Chrome to all Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S., after initially limiting the feature to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers. The company has also announced plans to integrate agentic capabilities into Chrome, add AI Mode search features to the address bar, launch new Gemini features, use AI to combat AI-generated scams, and implement automatic password resets.
Other recent Chrome features include a tool that automatically disables browser notifications for websites with which users haven’t interacted recently, and a feature that simplifies switching between work and personal Google accounts.
These continuous enhancements underscore Google’s commitment to improving user experience and security in its Chrome browser, making it a more efficient and reliable tool for managing personal information online.
