Google has unveiled version 9.0 of its Calculator app, featuring a comprehensive Material 3 Expressive redesign that enhances both aesthetics and functionality. This update aligns the app with Google’s latest design principles, offering users a more streamlined and intuitive experience.
Unified Background and Display Enhancements
One of the most notable changes is the removal of the traditional container that resembled a physical calculator’s display. In its place, the app now features a flat, unified background, creating a cleaner and more modern interface. The numerals displayed have transitioned to a slimmer font, which may require some adjustment for users accustomed to the previous design.
Improved Access to Calculation History
To enhance usability, a new button has been introduced in the top-left corner, providing direct access to the calculation history. This addition makes the tape functionality more visible and accessible, complementing the existing swipe-down gesture that users can still utilize.
Streamlined Scientific Functions
The update also reimagines the presentation of scientific functions. Previously, a row of scientific operations was always visible, but in this redesign, these functions are concealed by default. Users can reveal them by tapping an expand button, represented by two outward-facing chevrons located just above the numeric keypad on the left. Upon expansion, the scientific functions are displayed in pill-shaped buttons that extend to the screen’s edge, offering a cleaner and more organized layout. While this change contributes to a minimalist design, users who frequently access scientific functions may find the additional tap less convenient.
Refined Numeric Keypad and Menu Options
The numeric keys (0-9) now feature a lighter background, enhancing visual clarity. The three-dot overflow menu in the top-right corner has been updated to consistently display the Clear history option, with all menu items now accompanied by icons for improved navigation.
Optimized Landscape Layout for Tablets
For tablet users, the landscape layout has been adjusted to mirror the phone layout, resulting in wider buttons that improve usability on larger screens.
The rollout of Google Calculator 9.0 with the Material 3 Expressive redesign is currently underway and will be available to users via the Play Store.
