The conversation, led by reporter David Pogue, began with inquiries into Musk’s views on President Donald Trump’s policies, particularly the increasing restrictions on international students. Musk promptly redirected the discussion, stating, I think we want to stick to the subject of the day, which is, like, spaceships, as opposed to, you know, presidential policy.
This exchange highlights Musk’s preference to concentrate on his aerospace endeavors rather than engage in political debates. Pogue appeared taken aback by Musk’s response, noting, Oh, okay, I was told, ‘Anything’s good.’ Musk, maintaining his stance, replied, No. Well … no.
Despite his reluctance to delve into political matters, Musk addressed the controversies surrounding the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative he spearheaded aimed at streamlining federal operations. DOGE has faced criticism for its aggressive budget cuts across various agencies. Musk expressed his frustration, remarking, If there was some cut, real or imagined, everyone would blame DOGE.
Musk acknowledged the delicate position he finds himself in concerning the Trump administration. He stated, I don’t want to speak out against the administration, but I also don’t want to take responsibility for everything the administration’s doing. This sentiment underscores the challenges Musk faces in balancing his roles as a business leader and a public figure amid a polarized political climate.
The interview took place prior to SpaceX’s recent Starship test flight, which achieved a successful launch but encountered issues during reentry, resulting in a loss of control. When asked about the common thread among his various ventures—including Tesla, xAI, X (formerly Twitter), Neuralink, and The Boring Company—Musk reflected, I guess you could think of the businesses as things that improve the probable trajectory of civilization.
At the time of the interview, Musk was reportedly reducing his involvement in governmental affairs, dedicating only a day or two per week to such activities. He emphasized, DOGE is going to continue, just as a way of life. And I will have some participation in that, but as I’ve said publicly, my focus has to be on the companies at this point.
Following the interview, Musk’s comments criticizing a Trump-backed budget bill garnered significant media attention. Shortly thereafter, Musk announced his decision to step down from his role as a special government employee. However, President Trump later commented that Musk is not really leaving, suggesting ongoing involvement.
