Google Chrome’s interface has maintained a consistent look over the years. Now, the Android version is adopting Material 3 Expressive design elements to align with other Google applications.
The primary browsing interface, including the Omnibox, remains largely unchanged. However, the loading indicator has been updated to a segmented progress bar with rounded corners, reflecting the Material 3 Expressive aesthetic.
Upon accessing the three-dot overflow menu, users will notice that key actions such as forward navigation, bookmarking, downloads, site information, and page refresh are now housed within circular containers. This design choice enhances the visibility and accessibility of these functions.
In the Tab Grid view, the ‘new tab’ button is now enclosed in a rounded square, while the tab, Incognito mode, and Groups switcher are also placed within containers. Notably, the theming of unselected Tab Groups is based on the user’s chosen color scheme, adding a personalized touch to the browsing experience.
Historically, Chrome has undergone visual updates to stay in sync with Google’s evolving design philosophies. The integration of Material 3 Expressive elements continues this trend, subtly enhancing the interface without deviating from its established structure. These updates are currently rolling out with Chrome version 139 on devices like the Pixel 10 and Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1.
