Chrome’s Enhanced Autofill Now Supports Driver’s Licenses and Vehicle Information
In a significant update, Google has expanded Chrome’s Autofill capabilities to include personal identification and vehicle details, streamlining online form completion for users. This enhancement allows Chrome to automatically populate fields requiring information such as passport numbers, driver’s license details, and vehicle identifiers like license plate numbers or Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs).
Traditionally, Chrome’s Autofill feature has been instrumental in saving time by storing and entering addresses, passwords, and payment information. With the introduction of the Enhanced Autofill option, the browser now extends its functionality to cover a broader spectrum of personal data. For instance, when booking a rental car online, Chrome can seamlessly fill in your first and last name, driver’s license number, and the state of issuance, thereby reducing manual input and potential errors.
Beyond merely adding new data types, this update enhances Chrome’s comprehension of complex forms and diverse formatting requirements. This improvement ensures that Autofill operates more accurately across various websites, adapting to different form structures and input fields.
Security and privacy remain paramount in this update. Google emphasizes that any data saved through Autofill is stored only with the user’s explicit permission and is subsequently protected by encryption. Additionally, while the Autofill feature may share a page’s URL and content with Google to facilitate accurate form filling, users are required to confirm before any information is automatically entered. This confirmation step adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that sensitive information is not shared without user consent.
To activate this feature on the desktop version of Chrome, users can navigate to:
– Settings > Autofill and passwords > Enhanced Autofill
Here, you’ll find the option labeled: Chrome understands forms better and can autofill them faster for you. Enabling this setting will activate the new Autofill capabilities.
This rollout begins today and is set to be available globally across all languages. Google has also announced plans to support even more data types in the coming months, further broadening the scope of Autofill’s utility.
