Apple’s iPhone 17 Series Sees Robust Demand, Pro Max Leads Sales

Apple’s latest iPhone 17 lineup has garnered significant consumer interest, with initial orders surpassing those of the previous iPhone 16 series. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo attributes this surge to the strong appeal of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which has emerged as the standout model in the series.

Analyzing Demand Trends

Kuo’s assessment is based on two primary factors: production volumes obtained from supply chain insights and the rate at which shipping times extended post-launch. His findings indicate a notable increase in demand for the iPhone 17 series.

In terms of total production volume for the third quarter for the Pro Max, Pro, and standard models, the iPhone 17 is approximately 25% higher year-over-year compared to the iPhone 16, Kuo notes. However, the shipping time has only increased by about one week, indicating stronger overall pre-order demand for these three iPhone 17 models. This suggests that the first weekend pre-order demand for the iPhone 17 series is stronger than last year’s iPhone 16.

iPhone 17 Pro Max: The Star Performer

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has particularly stood out in terms of consumer preference. Kuo highlights that its production volume in the third quarter of 2025 is approximately 60% higher than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max during the same period last year. Despite this substantial increase in production, shipping times have remained consistent, underscoring the robust demand for this model.

iPhone Air: Awaiting Clearer Demand Signals

Conversely, the iPhone Air’s demand patterns are less definitive. Kuo observes that customers can still preorder the iPhone Air and receive it on the first day of availability. This could imply that Apple may have overestimated the initial demand for this new ultra-sleek model. However, Kuo advises caution in drawing conclusions, noting that since Apple has not previously offered a product positioned like the Air, it would be more objective to observe demand trends after the initial sales period.

9to5Mac’s Perspective

The strong demand for the iPhone 17 Pro Max aligns with expectations, given its appeal to content creators and filmmakers, as well as its suitability as an upgrade for users with older models. Regarding the iPhone Air, while its day-one availability might suggest an overestimation of demand, it’s also possible that Apple has accurately matched production with consumer interest. Notably, some consumers who previously opted for Pro models are now considering the iPhone Air, indicating a shift in purchasing preferences.
