Apple is actively developing its first foldable iPhone, focusing on enhancing screen durability and user experience. The company is evaluating advanced materials for the protective film that overlays the ultra-thin glass of the foldable display. This outer layer is crucial, as it directly impacts the screen’s resistance to scratches and overall tactile feel.

According to a report from The Elec, Apple is considering two primary materials for this protective film: polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and colorless polyimide (CPI). While PET is commonly used in current foldable devices, Apple is leaning towards CPI due to its superior surface hardness and enhanced scratch resistance. Although CPI is more expensive than PET, its durability benefits align with Apple’s commitment to delivering high-quality products.

Industry sources suggest that Kolon Industry, a company that has established a mass production line for CPI, could be a potential supplier for Apple. Additionally, Lens Technology is expected to provide the ultra-thin glass and manage the bonding process of the final protective film.

Beyond the screen materials, Apple’s foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch crease-free inner display and a 5.5-inch cover display. The device may also include Touch ID, two rear cameras, the A20 chip, and the C2 modem. These specifications indicate Apple’s dedication to combining innovative design with robust functionality.

As Apple progresses towards the launch of its foldable iPhone, expected alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this year, the company’s meticulous approach to material selection and design underscores its commitment to delivering a durable and user-friendly foldable device.
