Harnessing the Power of Movement: How Apple Watch and a Plush Pop-Tart Transformed My Well-being
In late February, I found myself grappling with a pervasive sense of unease. The cumulative weight of the past decade had taken its toll, leaving me in a state of heightened anxiety. This internal turmoil was vividly captured in my Journal app entry from February 28:
7:11 am, woke up around 6:40. Stressful dreams. High anxiety right now. Nervous and uneasy. Grateful for Rory.
Amidst this emotional turbulence, the arrival of spring offered a glimmer of hope. Two unexpected allies emerged in my journey toward mental clarity: my Apple Watch and a plush Pop-Tart gifted by my eight-year-old son, Rory.
On that same day, seeking solace, I invited Rory and our dog, Nova, for a walk to the beach. The Apple Watch meticulously recorded our activity: a two-mile journey completed in one hour. This simple act of movement, combined with the change of scenery and the warmth of the sun, provided a much-needed respite from my anxious thoughts. Rory’s thoughtful gesture of giving me a stress-relieving plush Pop-Tart, reminiscent of my favorite cookies ‘n’ cream flavor, added a touch of comfort to my day.
The following morning, March 1, began with a familiar sense of unease, as noted in my journal:
7:27 am, I’ve been awake for an hour. Uneasy, but not as aggressively as yesterday morning I think. Charging Rory’s iPad from zero. 52º, some but not all windows open. Can hear birds singing.
As the day progressed, the anxiety intensified:
8:40 am, starting to feel more ‘noise’ in my head and chest and throat. Hopefully we can go walk again shortly. Rory up and watching iPad after we went over some word definitions. 62º now, closer to 70º in an hour.
Recognizing the therapeutic benefits of our previous walk, I once again encouraged Rory and Nova to join me, this time exploring a different route. We ventured to the National Seashore park area, including a small trail behind the trees, picking up trash along the way. The physical activity and connection with nature once again alleviated my anxiety, reinforcing the positive impact of movement on my mental state.
The plush Pop-Tart, affectionately dubbed my Emotional Support Pop-Tart, served as a tangible reminder of the importance of self-care and the support of loved ones. Rory’s thoughtful gift became a symbol of comfort and a catalyst for positive change.
A cold front at the start of the following week posed a challenge to maintaining our new routine. The temptation to remain indoors was strong, but reflecting on my journal entries and the data from my Apple Watch motivated me to persevere. The Health app’s Trends feature provided encouraging insights, highlighting the positive impact of our walks on my overall well-being.
This experience underscored the profound connection between physical activity and mental health. The Apple Watch served as a valuable tool in tracking and encouraging movement, while the plush Pop-Tart symbolized the importance of emotional support and self-care. Together, they played a pivotal role in my journey toward improved mental clarity and well-being.
