Apple Supports Developers in Adapting to Australia’s New Social Media Age Restrictions

Apple Equips Developers for Australia’s Upcoming Social Media Age Restrictions

In response to Australia’s forthcoming legislation prohibiting individuals under 16 from maintaining social media accounts, Apple is proactively assisting developers in aligning their applications with the new legal standards. The law, set to take effect on December 10, mandates the deactivation of existing accounts held by users under 16 and restricts the creation of new accounts for this age group.

To facilitate compliance, Apple has introduced a suite of tools and guidelines designed to help developers adapt their apps accordingly:

1. Declared Age Range API: This API enables developers to request and verify the age range of users, allowing for the customization of app experiences to suit different age groups. For instance, developers can identify users under 16 and adjust app functionalities to comply with the new regulations.

2. App Store Descriptions: Developers are encouraged to utilize the app description field to clearly communicate age restrictions and suitability, providing users with transparent information about the app’s appropriateness for various age groups.

3. In-App Controls on Product Pages: Apple has updated its age ratings questionnaire to include queries about in-app controls, such as age verification and parental controls. Apps that implement these features can highlight them on their App Store product pages, informing users and guardians of the measures in place to ensure compliance.

4. Higher Minimum Age Ratings: Developers now have the option to set a higher age rating for their apps than the one automatically generated by the age ratings questionnaire. This flexibility allows developers to proactively align their apps with regional legal requirements.

5. Age Suitability URL: An optional feature that lets developers include a link to a webpage detailing the app’s age-related content and suitability. This URL appears on the App Store product page, offering users additional context and information.

Apple emphasizes that while it provides these tools, the onus is on developers to ensure their applications fully comply with Australia’s new law. By leveraging these resources, developers can create age-appropriate experiences and maintain adherence to regional regulations.
