Apple Expands Indian Manufacturing with New Education Hub in Bengaluru
Apple is intensifying its manufacturing efforts in India by launching its inaugural Education Hub in Bengaluru. This initiative, in partnership with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), aims to enhance the skills of supplier employees in areas such as digital literacy, Swift coding, robotics, automation technology, and smart manufacturing. The first courses are set to commence in March.
This development is part of Apple’s global $50 million Supplier Employee Development Fund, reflecting the company’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce within its supply chain. The Education Hub will serve as a collaborative space where trainers and students can engage directly with specialized educators. MAHE faculty will deliver these curricula to supplier trainers, who will then extend the training to a broader employee base.
Apple’s collaboration with Tata Electronics marks the beginning of this expanded training program. The curriculum is designed to equip supplier employees with essential skills in digital literacy, Swift coding, robotics, automation technology, and smart manufacturing. These courses represent the latest efforts under Apple’s Supplier Employee Development Fund, aiming to uplift the capabilities of its global supply chain workforce.
Furthermore, Apple plans to broaden its Vocational Education for Persons with Disabilities program in India later this year. This initiative has already benefited over 18,000 supplier employees worldwide. The expansion will reach more supplier facilities in India, offering additional training and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. It also aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and inclusivity practices within supplier facilities.
Apple’s strategic focus on India has been evident in recent years. The company has been steadily increasing its manufacturing footprint in the country, with significant investments and partnerships. For instance, Foxconn, a key Apple supplier, has been expanding its operations in India, including setting up new units focused on producing iPhone casings. This move is part of a broader strategy to diversify Apple’s supply chain and reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
In addition to manufacturing, Apple has been strengthening its retail presence in India. The company opened its first two Indian stores in Mumbai and Delhi in 2023 and has plans to open a third store in Bengaluru’s Phoenix Mall of Asia. This expansion underscores Apple’s commitment to the Indian market, aligning with its broader strategy to tap into the country’s growing consumer base and manufacturing capabilities.
Apple’s initiatives in India are also supported by favorable government policies. The Indian government has been offering tax breaks and incentives to attract foreign investment in manufacturing. For example, the removal of import duties on certain components has made it more cost-effective for companies like Apple to produce devices locally. These policy changes are part of India’s broader efforts to position itself as a global manufacturing hub.
