Anthropic Ends Claude Subscriptions for Third-Party Tools Like OpenClaw
Anthropic has officially terminated third-party AI agent access to its Claude subscription, marking a significant shift in how users can utilize its models outside the company’s native ecosystem. Effective April 4, 2026, at 12 p.m. PT (8 p.m. BST), Claude Pro and Max subscribers can no longer apply their existing subscription limits to power third-party automation tools such as OpenClaw. This enforcement begins with OpenClaw and will extend to all third-party harnesses in the coming weeks.
OpenClaw, a popular open-source AI agent framework, is widely used for tasks including email management, web browsing, and smart home automation. Many users have leveraged an OAuth authentication loophole to integrate subscription-tier Claude models into their personal agents at a flat monthly rate. Although Anthropic’s Consumer Terms of Service have technically prohibited unauthorized third-party tool access since at least February 2024, enforcement has been lax until now.
In February 2026, Anthropic formally revised its terms to explicitly state that OAuth authentication is reserved exclusively for Claude Code and Claude.ai. The recent crackdown was prompted, in part, by the scale of the issue. Anthropic indicated that third-party harnesses were placing an outsized strain on its infrastructure, necessitating prioritization of capacity for customers using its core products.
Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw, and board member Dave Morin attempted to negotiate with Anthropic to delay the enforcement. Steinberger noted that their efforts only managed to postpone the action by a week. He also highlighted the timing of Anthropic’s decision, suggesting that the company first incorporated popular features into their closed harness before restricting open-source access.
Users who wish to continue integrating third-party agents with their Claude account now have two options:
1. Enable pay-as-you-go extra usage billing: This option is charged separately from the subscription.
2. Authenticate using a standard Claude API key: This method involves metered API pricing.
To mitigate the financial impact, Anthropic is offering a one-time credit equal to the user’s monthly subscription cost, redeemable by April 17. Additionally, discounts of up to 30% are available when pre-purchasing bundles of extra usage. Subscribers who prefer not to continue under the new terms have the option to receive a full subscription refund.
The policy change has elicited significant pushback from the developer and power-user community. Many users who relied on OpenClaw-plus-Claude workflows report that per-interaction costs now range from $0.50 to $2.00 per agent task, rendering autonomous agent use cases economically unviable for hobbyists and solo developers. Critics argue that Anthropic promoted agentic workflows while simultaneously restricting the most affordable means to build them.
This policy shift underscores a broader industry tension between AI companies monetizing infrastructure and developer communities seeking open, flat-rate access to advanced models.
