Android Auto Enhances Google Maps with Advanced EV Charging Filters
In a significant update for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, Google Maps on Android Auto is introducing enhanced features to simplify the search for compatible charging stations. The latest beta release, Android Auto 15.7.654604, introduces customizable filters for charging speed and payment methods, aiming to streamline the EV charging experience.
Persistent Payment Method Filters
Previously, EV drivers had to manually apply filters for charging speed and payment methods with each search, a process that could be cumbersome during travel. The new update addresses this by allowing users to set their preferred payment methods in advance. This feature is accessible through the EV payment filters setting within the Android Auto settings menu. Once configured, Google Maps will prioritize displaying charging stations that accept the selected payment methods, reducing the need for repeated manual filtering.
The available payment methods include a comprehensive list of providers, such as:
– EVgo
– ChargePoint
– Blink Network
– ChargeHub Passport
– AmpUp
– BP Pulse
– DKV Card + Charge
– E.ON Drive
– Electric Circuit
– Electrify America
– etron Charging Service
– EV Connect
– EVCS App
– EWE Go
– FLO
– Mobiflow
– MoveMove
– Northe
– Octopus Electroverse
– OVO Energy
– Pass+
– Plugsurfing
– Shell Recharge
– Smoov
– Supercharge (non-Tesla)
– Travelcard
– Virta
– Zap-Pay
These options are organized into two sections: Common, featuring the five most frequently used payment methods in the user’s country, and Other, listing all available options. This organization ensures that users can quickly access the most relevant payment methods for their region.
Enhanced Charging Speed Filters
In addition to payment method filters, Google is developing a persistent filter for charging speeds within Google Maps settings. This feature will allow drivers to set their preferred charging speed once, eliminating the need to adjust this setting for each search. While not yet live in the current beta release, this functionality has been observed in development.
The charging speed options will include:
– Slow charge (up to 49kW)
– Quick charge (50kW or higher)
For more granular control, users can select specific charging speeds in increments of:
– Up to 9kW
– 10 to 49kW
– 50 to 149kW
– 150 to 349kW
– 350kW and faster
Users will have the flexibility to select multiple options, ensuring that the search results align closely with their charging preferences and vehicle capabilities.
Integration with Existing Features
These enhancements build upon previous updates aimed at improving the EV driving experience. For instance, in August 2023, Google Maps on Android Auto replaced the default gas stations shortcut with a charging stations shortcut for EV users. This change made it more convenient for drivers to locate nearby charging stations without manual searches.
Additionally, in September 2024, Android Auto added support for the North American Charging Standard (NACS), enabling non-Tesla EVs to locate and utilize Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. This integration expanded charging options for a broader range of EV drivers.
Future Developments
Google’s commitment to enhancing the EV driving experience is evident in these updates. By introducing persistent filters for payment methods and charging speeds, Google Maps on Android Auto aims to provide a more seamless and efficient navigation experience for EV drivers. These features are expected to roll out widely following the beta testing phase, offering users a more personalized and convenient way to locate compatible charging stations.
