Apple’s 2025 iPad Pro: Production Advances Amid Pricing Concerns

Apple is progressing with the production of its 2025 iPad Pro, featuring advanced OLED displays. Both Samsung Display and LG Display commenced mass production of these panels in June 2025, signaling a potential product launch later this year, possibly in October.

The transition to OLED technology in the iPad Pro lineup aims to deliver enhanced visual quality, including deeper blacks and improved contrast ratios. However, this technological advancement has led to increased production costs, which are expected to be reflected in the device’s retail price.

In 2024, Apple shipped approximately 6.3 million OLED panels for iPads, falling short of the initially projected 9 million units. Analysts attribute this shortfall to subdued consumer demand, primarily due to the premium pricing of OLED-equipped iPad Pros. Despite these challenges, OLED panel shipments for 2025 are anticipated to remain consistent with the previous year’s figures.

Apple’s long-term strategy involves transitioning all iPad models to OLED displays, mirroring the evolution seen in the iPhone lineup. The iPad mini is slated to adopt OLED technology in 2026, followed by the iPad Air in 2027. This phased approach allows Apple to manage production complexities and address cost implications associated with OLED integration.

Diversifying the supply chain for OLED panels is another focal point for Apple. While Samsung and LG are currently the primary suppliers, Apple aims to incorporate Chinese manufacturer BOE into its roster. However, BOE has encountered technical challenges, particularly in meeting Apple’s stringent low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED display standards. These issues have delayed BOE’s inclusion in the supply chain, but efforts are ongoing to resolve these hurdles.

The forthcoming iPad Pro is also expected to feature Apple’s next-generation M5 chip, built using TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer process technology. This chip promises significant performance enhancements, including improved multitasking capabilities and energy efficiency. Mass production of the M5 iPad Pro is anticipated to commence in the latter half of 2025, aligning with the projected launch timeline.

Despite the technological advancements, the anticipated high pricing of the 2025 iPad Pro may deter potential buyers. Apple’s challenge lies in balancing the integration of cutting-edge features with pricing strategies that appeal to a broad consumer base. The company’s approach to this balance will be crucial in determining the market reception of the new iPad Pro.
