Apple Music has quietly introduced a nostalgic surprise on its website: a fully interactive virtual model of the first-generation iPod hidden in its 404 (“Page Not Found”) pages. When you land on a non-existent Apple Music web address—anything invalid under music.apple.com—you’ll be greeted with this throwback interface. It’s a web-only easter egg; the feature doesn’t show up in the Apple Music app on iOS or macOS.
How It Works
The virtual iPod includes the classic click wheel and monochrome display, with navigation via that wheel—or arrow and Enter keys on desktop. Menus mirror the originals: Playlists, Artists, Songs, Settings, and About. Tapping into Settings lets you toggle shuffle, repeat, and even disable the click-wheel sound. From the About screen, holding the center button for about five seconds unlocks a hidden Breakout-style game called “Brick,” an homage to Apple’s early hardware easter eggs.
What You Can Play
Users can explore a music library filled with artists from Apple’s deep catalog—names like Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Eminem, and Lady Gaga all show up, among others. Songs play as preview clips: tracks over 2 minutes 30 seconds offer ~90-second excerpts; shorter ones are capped around 30 seconds. No subscription or account is needed.
Nostalgia Meets Timing
Apple released this easter egg on October 23, 2026—the 25th anniversary of the original iPod’s unveiling by Steve Jobs. Today, the iconic click wheel, monochrome screen and mechanical scroll dial hold symbolic weight even though Apple discontinued the iPod product line in 2022. This easter egg feels less like a promotional move and more like a tribute, an interactive nod to the tech that shaped the company and music culture.
This hidden gem underlines how tech giants can use nostalgia not just as marketing but as immersive storytelling. It also shows Apple still values its legacy, and understands the power of engaging users with stories, not just services. For Apple Music, this easter egg isn’t about revenue—it’s about connection.
