Chromecast with Google TV’s Android 14 Update: A Troubled Rollout and Uncertain Future

In March 2025, Google initiated the rollout of the Android 14 update for its Chromecast with Google TV devices. This update was anticipated to enhance system stability and introduce new features, including support for the Google TV Streamer’s Voice Remote functionalities like Find My Remote and a customizable button. Additionally, the update included the January 2025 security patch.

However, shortly after its release, users began reporting significant issues post-update. Common problems included the device failing to recognize external storage devices, remote control malfunctions, loss of audio requiring multiple restarts, and unexpected Low Battery warnings when connected to certain USB adapters. Some users also experienced altered color profiles and navigation issues within system menus.

In response to these widespread issues, Google quietly halted the Android 14 update rollout. As of June 2025, the update remains unavailable, leaving many users without the anticipated improvements. Google has not provided a clear timeline for when the update will resume, leading to frustration among the Chromecast community.

Compounding the uncertainty, Google discontinued the Chromecast with Google TV product line in February 2025, replacing it with the more advanced Google TV Streamer. This new device offers enhanced hardware capabilities, including a MediaTek processor, 4 GB of RAM, and support for Thread networking. The discontinuation raises questions about the future support and updates for existing Chromecast devices.

Despite the discontinuation, Google had committed to providing software updates for existing Chromecast with Google TV devices, including the Android 14 update. However, the current pause in the rollout and lack of communication from Google have left users uncertain about the device’s future.

In the interim, users experiencing issues are advised to perform multiple device restarts or consider a factory reset to mitigate some problems. However, these are temporary solutions, and users are encouraged to await official updates from Google.

As the situation develops, Chromecast with Google TV users are left in limbo, awaiting further information on when, or if, the Android 14 update will be re-released and whether their devices will continue to receive support in the future.
