Google is rolling out a major change to its Gemini AI platform: the company is phasing out Gems in favor of a new system called Skills, which will now be available to all Gemini users—even those with free accounts. The switch aims to unify how people automate recurring tasks and customize their AI experience.
What’s Changing: From Gems to Skills
Previously, users of Google’s Gemini had access to Gems: reusable instructions or prompts for common tasks. These included writing in a certain style, preparing for presentations, or getting alternative viewpoints. Starting today, Skills replace Gems in the Gemini Chat interface, launched originally as part of Google’s Spark agent. The big difference? You no longer need to go through Gemini’s Gem Manager—everything happens directly from the main prompt box, using simple “/” commands. It’s meant to be smoother and more intuitive.
Migration Timeline and Availability
Skills aren’t just a future promise—they’re already live for many Gemini Chat users around the globe as of September 30, 2026. For those still without access, expect Skills to arrive in the coming weeks. As part of the migration, all existing Gems will be converted into Skills automatically for free-tier Gemini users. There’s no need for manual action.
The changes affect different user groups on different schedules. Personal Google accounts will lose access to Gems starting in November 2026. For Google Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts, the cutover happens in March 2027. Education institutions have the most time—their accounts transition in June 2027.
Feature Parity & What’s Coming
Not all abilities of Gems are yet baked into Skills. Over the next few weeks, Skills will gain full parity with Gems. This includes sharing Skills via links and incorporating context from Google Drive—such as documents or notebooks—so AI responses can be more informed and aligned with users’ existing work.
Today, users can already use Skills to speed up tasks like prep for presentations, adapt writing style, and ask for different perspectives. As more features arrive, Skills will become your go-to building blocks within Gemini, replacing workflows built around Gems.
What to Watch For: Keep an eye on how fast Skills reach full parity, especially sharing and contextual features—these were central to the appeal of Gems. Also important: whether Google preserves the flexibility of custom Gems or how steep the learning curve is for people transitioning from the old system.
