Apple’s development of its foldable iPhone Duo was surrounded by unusually high levels of secrecy — so much so that even staff-level leaks failed to spoil the surprise. In interviews with senior Apple figures, the company described how the product kept its final shape hidden until it was ready for the world.
The relentless guard on the Duo project
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said the firm put stringent security in place to protect the Duo’s development. They used a deliberately whimsical codename with no clue to the device’s nature, and limited knowledge of the project even within Apple. While some leaks revealed pieces — like its aspect ratio or shape hints — the broader vision stayed under wraps until launch.
John Ternus, Apple’s CEO, recounted the moment when the device’s design truly felt concrete. He described creating design mockups and prototypes as the point where the shape and feel of the Duo came into focus. Once that “aha” model was nailed down, the focus shifted to engineering, scaling, and turning those prototypes into a real product.
Collaboration beyond indoor walls
Part of bringing the Duo to life involved collaborating outside of Apple’s usual inner circle. Joswiak revealed that a select group of third-party developers were brought in early to explore how software might leverage the Duo’s large, fold-out display. The response was enthusiastic; developers saw opportunities and signed on quickly.
Price was a major talking point. The iPhone Duo arrives with the highest price tag in Apple’s smartphone history. Ternus emphasized that despite its complexity, the device still delivers value—partly because it essentially blends two devices into one: the familiar iPhone experience plus an expansive screen more akin to an iPad when unfolded, as Joswiak pointed out.
The overall lineup, he added, now accommodates varied priorities. For those wanting maximum screen real estate and a pioneering design, the Duo is the go-to. For others, the pre-existing iPhone 18 Pro remains a strong, more conventional flagship option.
The iPhone Duo’s defining feature is this foldable design that marries a large display with a phone you can fold up and carry. It’s seen as Apple’s answer both to rumors of leaks and to market pressures in foldables and premium smartphones. Many observers believe this is Apple’s boldest hardware shift in years.
