Instead of releasing both the Air 2 and a separate iPhone 18, the theory is they’d merge, essentially making the Air 2 the new baseline device. What We Thought Was Coming

Rumors for over a year have described three distinct models emerging in spring 2027: the standard iPhone 18, a cheaper iPhone 18e, and the iPhone Air 2. These would join the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max variants already expected in the fall, alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone. That makes the proposed merge—eliminating both the standard and ‘e’ models in favor of the Air 2—even more disruptive.
Part of the logic for this change draws on how Apple has historically released new features on its higher-end models first, then progressively brought them into more affordable tiers.
