Just days before Apple’s fall event—set for September 9—the leaks around the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are falling into place. Here’s what appears likely, based on the latest rumors.
Design & Display Changes
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to retain the familiar overall design seen in the iPhone 17 Pro, but with a more refined touch. Rumors point to smoother, more seamless rear glass and aluminum transitions that reduce contrast between the frame and back panel. A reworked Dynamic Island is also said to be smaller—potentially enabled by moving some Face ID components below the display.
Display tech is evolving too. The Pro models may adopt an LTPO+ panel, which offers improved power efficiency. Suppliers are tipped to include both Samsung Display and LG Display in that mix.
Performance, Power & Cameras
Inside, Apple is believed to introduce the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometer process from TSMC. This chip is expected to employ WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) technology, promising gains in speed and energy usage.
The bigger Pro Max model is rumored to have a significantly larger battery—around 5,100 to 5,200 mAh—making the phone thicker and heavier in exchange for longer usage between charges.
Camera-wise, expect upgraded hardware: both Pro variants could feature a new three-layer stacked image sensor from Samsung, bringing improvements to low-light performance, response times, and dynamic range. The 48-megapixel Fusion main camera may also get a variable aperture, giving more flexibility with lighting and depth effects. Apple may simplify the camera control button too, leaning on pressure-sensing instead of a separate capacitive layer.
Connectivity, Software & Variants
On the wireless front, rumors suggest the launch models will support 5G satellite internet—an expansion beyond Apple’s existing emergency-only satellite features. A new C2 modem is also expected, though whether it will include mmWave support is unclear; in the U.S., there’s speculation Apple might continue using Qualcomm’s modem while deploying its own C2 elsewhere.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup will ship with iOS 27, which brings a revamped Siri experience, with greater onscreen awareness, more personalized context, improved web knowledge, and expanded Apple Intelligence features. New finishes are said to be in the works—Light Blue, Dark Cherry, and Silver are still in contention, while a Black option seems to be dropped.
Release Timing & Other Models
Pre-orders for the Pro models are rumored to begin on September 12 at midnight Pacific Time. Apple appears to be holding off on standard models this year—the iPhone 18, 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are likely to arrive in spring 2027 instead. The foldable “iPhone Ultra” also remains part of the premium device builds Apple is unveiling this fall.
With the iPhone 18 Pro expected to bring in the latest display tech, performance up the charts, and upgraded camera systems, Apple is clearly pushing ahead on what defines “premium” in the iPhone family. But these changes also raise key questions: will battery gains offset the thicker design? Does the new variable aperture truly move the needle for mobile photography?
