Fairphone 6+ Brings Repairable Design to U.S. Market

Fairphone, the Dutch company renowned for its commitment to sustainable and repairable electronics, has announced the U.S. launch of its latest smartphone, the Fairphone 6+. Priced at $649, this marks the first time American consumers can purchase a Fairphone device directly, without modifications.

Previously, Fairphone’s presence in the U.S. was limited to partnerships with organizations like Murena, which offered versions of Fairphone’s devices running alternative operating systems. Now, with the Fairphone 6+, the company is expanding its reach, offering a device that supports major carriers such as T-Mobile and AT&T.

The Fairphone 6+ is designed with longevity in mind. It features 12 replaceable components, including the battery, cameras, USB-C port, and display. These parts can be easily swapped out using a standard screwdriver, empowering users to perform repairs themselves. This modular approach is complemented by a five-year warranty and a commitment to provide software support until 2033.

Under the hood, the Fairphone 6+ is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor and comes equipped with 12GB of RAM. It boasts a 4,415 mAh battery supporting 30W fast charging. The device sports a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, ensuring smooth visuals.

Photography enthusiasts will find a 50-megapixel main camera with an f/1.88 aperture, accompanied by a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens with an f/2.2 aperture. For selfies, there’s a 32-megapixel front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

In line with its sustainability mission, Fairphone has managed to reduce the carbon footprint of each Fairphone 6+ unit to 30 kg of CO2e. The device is available in three color options: Forest Green, Horizon Black, and Cobalt Blue. Additionally, Fairphone offers accessories like a finger loop, lanyard, and cardholder, which can be attached by removing the back cover.

Fairphone’s entry into the U.S. market with the 6+ model signifies a growing demand for sustainable and repairable technology. As consumers become more conscious of environmental impacts and the longevity of their devices, Fairphone’s approach offers a compelling alternative to the traditional smartphone lifecycle. This move could potentially influence other manufacturers to consider more sustainable practices in their product designs.
