This offering provides each student with a full WordPress.com domain, complimentary domain names on .blog or .art extensions, and support for plugins.
Educators can grant their students access to this program for the first year without any financial commitment or the need to provide credit card information. This facilitates the integration of website-building into various courses, enabling students to develop practical skills in web development and digital content creation.
Unveiled at the annual WordCamp US conference, the Student Plan is a comprehensive package that includes 6 GB of storage, automated backups, staging sites, and advanced tools such as SFTP/SSH access, phpMyAdmin, and Studio Sync. These features ensure that students have a robust platform to experiment with and learn from.
WordPress.com, operated by Automattic, is a leading website and blog hosting service that utilizes the open-source WordPress software, which powers approximately 43% of all websites globally. Despite its widespread use, younger audiences often gravitate towards social media platforms for establishing their online presence. This new Student Plan aims to reintroduce WordPress as a foundational tool for web development among students.
Beyond providing free resources, this initiative seeks to integrate WordPress into educational settings, thereby training future professionals in website creation and management. During a pilot phase involving 5,000 students across 27 countries, the program received positive feedback. A significant majority of educators (88.9%) reported that access to the program enhanced their students’ employability, while 81.5% noted improvements in students’ entrepreneurial capabilities.
