Apple’s recently introduced Apple Upgrade program, which allows U.S. customers to lease devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, was initially set to include a feature that would preload users’ data onto new devices. This ‘white-glove’ service aimed to streamline the transition for users by having their personal data and settings pre-installed on their new devices upon delivery.
However, Apple decided to abandon this feature due to potential privacy concerns. The process would have required Apple to access and transfer users’ personal data, raising questions about data security and user privacy. The Apple Upgrade program, which replaces the decade-old iPhone Upgrade Program, offers flexible leasing options for a range of Apple products. Customers can lease an iPhone or Apple Watch for 12 or 24 months, and Macs and iPads for 24 to 36 months. At the end of the lease term, users have the option to return the device, upgrade to a new model, or purchase the device outright. Notably, the new program does not include AppleCare+ as standard, unlike its predecessor.
Apple’s decision to forgo the data preloading feature underscores the company’s commitment to user privacy.
