Fermi, a company at the intersection of artificial intelligence and nuclear power, has appointed Lee McIntire as its new Chief Executive Officer. This leadership change comes over three months after the dismissal of co-founder Toby Neugebauer from the CEO position.
McIntire, who has been serving as an independent member of Fermi’s board, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His previous positions include CEO roles at CH2M Hill and TerraPower, the nuclear power startup founded by Bill Gates. His extensive background in managing large-scale, complex projects positions him well to lead Fermi through its next phase of development.
Fermi is currently developing an AI campus in Amarillo, Texas, known as Project Matador. This ambitious initiative aims to utilize nuclear reactors to power data centers, providing a sustainable and robust energy solution for the growing demands of artificial intelligence applications.
The announcement of McIntire’s appointment coincides with Fermi securing its first binding customer lease for Project Matador with TensorWave. This development has positively impacted Fermi’s stock, which has risen nearly 23% since the news broke.
In April, Fermi underwent significant executive changes, including the removal of Neugebauer and CFO Miles Everson. These changes were part of a broader strategic shift referred to as ‘Fermi 2.0,’ which also included plans to establish a corporate headquarters in Dallas.
Marius Haas, Fermi’s chairman of the board, expressed confidence in McIntire’s ability to lead the company through its next chapter, emphasizing the importance of building on schedule, within budget, and safely. Haas highlighted McIntire’s 40 years of experience in delivering large, complex projects and his reputation for integrity as key factors in his selection.
Fermi’s strategic direction reflects a growing trend in the tech industry to integrate sustainable energy solutions with high-demand computing infrastructure. By leveraging nuclear power to meet the energy needs of AI applications, Fermi positions itself at the forefront of this movement. The appointment of a seasoned leader like McIntire underscores the company’s commitment to executing its ambitious plans effectively and responsibly.
