Google Unveils Pixel 11 Pro Fold with Enhanced Durability at $1,899

Google has officially introduced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, the latest addition to its foldable smartphone lineup, priced at $1,899. This new model emphasizes durability and design refinements, aiming to address common concerns associated with foldable devices.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is powered by Google’s Tensor G6 processor and offers faster charging capabilities. It features the new “HiLight” LED on the back and is available in two color options: “Olive” green and “Obsidian” black. Notably, the device is thinner at 10.1mm and approximately 10% lighter, weighing 239 grams. While these changes improve portability, the device still lags behind competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series in terms of slimness and weight.

In the camera department, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is equipped with a 48MP main sensor, a 10.5MP ultrawide lens, and a 10.8MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. The battery capacity stands at 4,806 mAh, which is modest compared to some rivals.

Durability is a standout feature of this model. Google has introduced a new hinge design and reinstated the IP68 dust and water resistance rating, a rarity among foldable smartphones. The front display utilizes a new ceramic material claimed to be three times more durable than previous versions. The back panel is made from a glass fiber composite, which Google describes as “nearly impossible to crack.” During hands-on demonstrations, the backplate reportedly withstood significant bending without shattering.

The inner display has been enhanced with thicker ultra-thin glass and a larger bend radius to reduce the crease, though improvements are subtle and still behind some competitors. Both the inner and outer displays have increased brightness levels, reaching up to 3,600 nits.

Google has also optimized software features for the foldable form factor. The device supports Live Transcribe in Gboard with sign language and introduces Bubbles in Android 17. Additionally, new animations have been added to the “Made You Look” camera feature.

Pre-orders for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold are now open, with the 256GB model, which includes 16GB of RAM, priced at $1,899. The official release date is set for August 20. Google is also offering a new leather-like case that covers the hinge for added protection.

With the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Google is making a concerted effort to address the durability issues that have plagued foldable smartphones. By incorporating advanced materials and design improvements, the company aims to enhance user confidence in the longevity of foldable devices. However, the device’s higher price point and incremental design changes may pose challenges in a competitive market where consumers seek both innovation and value.
