Spotify to Label AI-Generated Artists and Exclude Their Music from Recommendations

Spotify has announced a significant update to its platform by introducing ‘AI Persona’ labels for artist profiles that are entirely AI-generated. This initiative aims to provide transparency to users by clearly identifying non-human artists. The ‘AI Persona’ badge will be prominently displayed on the artist’s profile banner, in the About section, in search results, and on track listings within playlists.

In addition to labeling, Spotify will exclude music from these AI-generated profiles from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations. This means that unless a user explicitly follows an AI Persona, their music will not appear in personalized playlists or suggested tracks. This approach ensures that users have control over their listening experience and are not inadvertently exposed to AI-generated content.

Spotify’s decision to implement these changes is part of a broader effort to balance the integration of AI technologies with the preservation of authentic human artistry. The company has previously introduced features like AI-powered ‘Prompted Playlists’ and an AI DJ, showcasing its commitment to leveraging AI to enhance user experience. However, the rise of AI-generated music has also led to challenges, including the proliferation of low-quality content and unauthorized voice clones.

To address these issues, Spotify has been proactive in updating its policies. In September 2025, the company adopted industry-standard techniques to identify and label AI-generated music and banned unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes from its platform. The introduction of the ‘AI Persona’ label is a continuation of these efforts, providing users with clear information about the nature of the content they encounter.

Artists identified as AI Personas will have the opportunity to appeal the label if they believe it has been incorrectly applied. Additionally, Spotify plans to roll out a tool that allows users to report artist profiles that appear to be AI-generated but have not yet been labeled. This collaborative approach ensures that the platform remains a space for genuine artistic expression while embracing technological advancements.

By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to maintain a high-quality user experience, prevent the spread of low-quality AI-generated content, and support authentic artists in building their careers. This move reflects a growing industry trend towards transparency and accountability in the use of AI in creative fields.
