Hackers Exploit Fake Crypto Wallet Screens to Steal Recovery Phrases

Cybercriminals are employing sophisticated tactics to deceive cryptocurrency users by presenting counterfeit wallet interfaces and malicious browser extensions. These methods aim to extract sensitive information such as recovery phrases, login credentials, and active browser sessions.

This activity is part of the broader CastleLoader campaign, which utilizes deceptive software installers and prompts that coerce victims into executing harmful PowerShell commands. Once initiated, the loader discreetly downloads additional malware, complicating early detection efforts.

Fake Wallet Interfaces Target Recovery Phrases

A notable component of this campaign is the Rust-based NeedleStealer, which mimics legitimate desktop wallet applications. It convincingly replicates interfaces of popular wallets like Ledger, Trezor, and Exodus, prompting users to enter their recovery seed phrases. This strategy relies on social engineering rather than exploiting software vulnerabilities, tricking users into voluntarily providing critical information.

In the Noidret campaign, the wallet spoofer is delivered through a Node.js-based injector and a shellcode component. The malware is unpacked in the ProgramData directory alongside a legitimate Node.js binary, allowing it to blend seamlessly with normal software activity.

Malicious Browser Extensions Compromise Sessions

Another facet of the NeedleStealer component involves installing malicious browser extensions disguised as legitimate software. For instance, an extension posing as an ad blocker establishes persistent access to browser data and sessions. By capturing active session tokens, attackers can access accounts without needing passwords or triggering additional login challenges.
