OpenAI has announced plans to invest $750 billion in infrastructure by 2030, marking a 25% increase from earlier projections. This substantial investment aims to bolster the company’s data center capabilities to meet the escalating demands of artificial intelligence applications.
A significant portion of this investment is allocated to Project Camellia, a $20 billion data center campus in Georgia. Spanning 1,400 acres northwest of Savannah, the facility is designed to draw at least 3.2 gigawatts of power from Georgia Power, with capacity expected to come online between 2028 and 2032. OpenAI has committed to covering the full cost of infrastructure and electric services for this project.
In line with regulatory requirements, OpenAI will reduce its power consumption by up to 1 gigawatt during peak demand periods to alleviate strain on the grid. Additionally, Effingham County has granted a 50% property tax abatement for 15 years to support the development of Project Camellia.
While specific details about the energy sources for Project Camellia remain undisclosed, regulatory filings indicate that Georgia Power plans to add 9,885 megawatts of capacity, primarily from natural gas, supplemented by grid-scale batteries and solar energy. This expansion will more than double the utility’s natural gas fleet.
OpenAI has also appointed Brett Mayo, formerly of xAI, to oversee data center construction. Mayo’s experience includes leading the rapid development of the Colossus data center in Memphis, which faced environmental scrutiny due to unpermitted natural gas turbines affecting local air quality.
OpenAI’s aggressive infrastructure expansion underscores the company’s commitment to scaling its AI capabilities. However, the reliance on natural gas raises environmental concerns, highlighting the need for sustainable energy solutions in the tech industry’s growth trajectory.
