Substack Introduces AI Detection Tool for Newsletters

Substack has unveiled a new feature that enables readers to determine the extent to which newsletters are authored using artificial intelligence. This integration with Pangram, an AI detection software, allows users to scan posts, comments, and replies on Substack’s platform to estimate the proportion of content generated by humans versus AI.

While this move might initially seem detrimental to Substack’s business by potentially revealing that some newsletters are not entirely human-written, it aims to enhance transparency and trust in the long run. By identifying AI-generated content, Substack seeks to maintain the quality of its ecosystem and ensure readers are aware of the nature of the material they consume.

Substack’s CEO, Chris Best, emphasized the importance of human input in content creation. He stated that while software can handle many tasks, the core idea worth reading and sharing should originate from a person. This perspective underscores the company’s commitment to preserving the human element in writing.

The AI detection feature is available for any post, note, reply, or comment exceeding 100 characters on Substack’s app. Additionally, writers have the option to include an AI Author’s note, allowing them to disclose their use of AI in content creation. This tool is not designed to prohibit or penalize AI-assisted writing but to encourage transparency. Writers can also run Pangram on their drafts before publication and address any inaccuracies in the AI detection.

In the broader context, Substack’s initiative aligns with a growing trend among platforms to label AI-generated content. Social media sites have begun marking AI-generated photos and videos, and music streaming services are labeling and, in some cases, penalizing AI-generated music.
