WhatsApp Activates Reserved Usernames for Select iPhone Users

WhatsApp has begun activating reserved usernames for a select group of iPhone users, marking a significant step in its ongoing rollout of username-based identification. This development follows the initial introduction of username reservations, allowing users to claim unique handles ahead of the feature’s full implementation.

Users who have reserved a username can now check its activation status by navigating to Settings > Account > Username within the app. Upon activation, a banner appears at the top of the chat list, notifying users that their username is active and ready for use. This feature enables users to share their WhatsApp contact information without disclosing their phone numbers, enhancing privacy and control over personal data.

To further bolster security, WhatsApp offers an optional four-digit PIN. Users can configure this by selecting whether anyone who knows their username can contact them directly or if new contacts must also enter the PIN. This measure aims to prevent unauthorized access and potential impersonation attempts.

For those wishing to align their WhatsApp username with existing handles on other Meta platforms, such as Facebook or Instagram, verification of account ownership may be required. This step is designed to curb misuse of high-profile usernames and reduce the risk of impersonation, which could facilitate scams or misinformation.

Currently, the activation of reserved usernames is limited to a small number of users, including both beta testers and those on the official version of WhatsApp. To determine if your account has access, look for the activation banner in your chat list or visit the Username section in your profile settings. If the feature is not yet available, a message stating “Usernames are coming soon. We’ll let you know when yours is ready to use” will be displayed.

As WhatsApp continues to roll out this feature, it underscores the platform’s commitment to enhancing user privacy and security. By allowing users to communicate without sharing phone numbers, WhatsApp is aligning itself with other messaging platforms that prioritize user anonymity and control over personal information. Users are encouraged to reserve their preferred usernames promptly to ensure availability as the feature becomes more widely accessible.
