Signal, the renowned encrypted messaging application, is enhancing its functionality by introducing multi-device support in its latest Android beta release. This update allows users to link a secondary device to their existing Signal account without the necessity of an additional phone number.
Historically, Signal’s usage was confined to a single device per account, necessitating users to log in anew when switching devices. The only exceptions were the desktop application and a dedicated iPad app. With this new feature, users can now link up to five devices to a single account, streamlining the user experience across multiple platforms.
The process to link a secondary device is straightforward. Within the Signal app, users can access the overflow menu on the page where phone numbers are typically linked. Here, the new “Link device” option is available. Selecting this option generates a QR code, which can be scanned by the secondary device to establish the connection. During this setup, users have the choice to transfer their message history to the newly linked device, ensuring continuity in conversations.
It’s important to note that devices linked to an account will automatically be unlinked after 45 days of inactivity. Additionally, the primary device must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain the linkage. These measures are in place to uphold security and ensure the integrity of the linked devices feature.
Currently, this multi-device support is available in Signal version 8.20 for Android, accessible through the beta program. While a specific release date for the stable version hasn’t been announced, it’s anticipated that this feature will be rolled out to all users in the near future.
By introducing this functionality, Signal aligns itself with other messaging platforms like WhatsApp, which have long offered multi-device support. This development not only enhances user convenience but also reinforces Signal’s commitment to providing secure and versatile communication solutions.
