The current iPad mini 7 utilizes a 60Hz LCD display. The transition to OLED technology is anticipated to offer benefits such as higher contrast ratios, deeper blacks, and improved power efficiency. However, the retention of a 60Hz refresh rate may disappoint users who were expecting a smoother visual experience.
In contrast, Apple’s iPad Pro models are equipped with advanced two-stack low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels. These panels support ProMotion technology, allowing dynamic adjustment of the refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz, resulting in smoother scrolling and more responsive visuals. The decision to equip the upcoming iPad mini with a low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED panel, which typically supports fixed refresh rates like 60Hz, 90Hz, or 120Hz, suggests a focus on cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency.
Mass production of the new iPad mini is reportedly underway at Samsung Display’s A2 Generation 5.5 OLED production line in Asan, South Korea. This facility has the capability to produce both LTPO and LTPS panels, leaving room for speculation about the final display specifications of the device.
