Apple is reportedly developing its upcoming M7 Ultra chip to support up to 1.5 terabytes (TB) of unified memory, potentially matching the maximum RAM capacity of the 2019 Intel-based Mac Pro. This advancement would address a longstanding limitation in Apple Silicon Macs, where the integration of RAM directly onto the processor die has restricted memory expansion.
The unified memory architecture in Apple Silicon offers high-speed data transfer by combining RAM and the processor on a single chip. However, this design has historically limited the maximum available memory due to physical constraints. The M7 Ultra’s anticipated support for 1.5TB of RAM signifies a significant leap, effectively doubling the capacity planned for the forthcoming M5 Ultra chip, which is expected to offer up to 768GB of unified memory.
Despite these ambitious plans, the actual availability of a 1.5TB configuration may be influenced by current industry challenges, notably widespread memory-chip shortages that have increased component costs and limited supply. These shortages have already impacted Apple’s product offerings; earlier this year, the company discontinued the 512GB and 256GB RAM configurations for the M3 Ultra Mac Studio, leaving 96GB as the highest available option for that model.
Historically, Apple’s RAM pricing has been approximately $25 per additional gigabyte. Based on this pricing structure, upgrading from a base configuration of 128GB to 1.5TB could cost over $35,000, making it a substantial investment for users requiring extensive memory capacity.
