Apple Updates App Store Age Ratings for Social Media Features

Apple has introduced new questions in the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire, focusing on apps with social media functionalities. This update aims to enhance parental controls and child safety measures across Apple’s platforms.

During the Worldwide Developers Conference 2026 (WWDC26), Apple unveiled ‘Time Allowances,’ a feature designed to provide parents with more flexible tools to manage their children’s screen time across various app categories, including Entertainment, Games, and Social Media. To support this initiative, Apple has updated the age rating questionnaire in App Store Connect to include specific inquiries about social media capabilities within apps.

According to Apple’s definition, a social media capability is characterized by the ability to redistribute, amplify, or interact with user-generated content through a social feed or similar discovery method. Apps identified with these capabilities will be categorized under the Time Allowance for Social Media, irrespective of their primary category in App Store Connect, and will receive a minimum age rating of 13+. Additionally, these apps will display a new Social Media content descriptor on their App Store product pages.

Developers can review and respond to these new questions starting immediately. Beginning in September 2026, completing these questions will be mandatory for submitting new apps or updates to the App Store, as well as for app notarization for alternative distribution.

This development underscores Apple’s commitment to aligning its App Store policies with evolving digital safety standards and parental control needs. By refining age ratings and categorizing apps based on their functionalities, Apple aims to provide a safer and more transparent environment for younger users and their guardians.
