OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.6 Series with Sol, Terra, and Luna Models

OpenAI has introduced its latest suite of AI models, GPT-5.6, comprising three distinct variants: Sol, Terra, and Luna. These models are designed to cater to a wide range of applications, from enterprise solutions to coding and scientific research.

Sol stands as the flagship model, optimized for complex tasks such as cybersecurity and advanced coding. It boasts enhanced efficiency, being 54% more token-efficient in AI coding tasks compared to its predecessors. Terra offers a balanced performance suitable for general use, while Luna provides a cost-effective solution for high-volume, lightweight tasks.

In addition to the new models, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a tool aimed at assisting enterprise teams with daily tasks like drafting documents, creating spreadsheets, and preparing presentations. This tool is accessible across desktop, web, and mobile platforms.

The release of GPT-5.6 follows a period of governmental scrutiny. The U.S. administration had initially requested a staggered rollout due to concerns over the models’ advanced capabilities, particularly in cybersecurity. However, after further evaluations and discussions, these restrictions have been lifted, allowing for a broader release.

OpenAI’s latest offerings are positioned to compete directly with Anthropic’s Fable 5 model. According to the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Sol sets a new benchmark with a score of 80, surpassing Fable 5 by 2.8 points, while being more efficient in terms of token usage, processing time, and cost.

GPT-5.6 models are now available through ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. Pricing per million tokens is set at $5 for input and $30 for output for Sol, $2.50 for input and $15 for output for Terra, and $1 for input and $6 for output for Luna.

The introduction of GPT-5.6 signifies a significant advancement in AI capabilities, offering tailored solutions for diverse user needs. As AI technology continues to evolve, the competition among leading AI developers is expected to drive further innovations and improvements in the field.
