FanDuel Faces Lawsuit Over Bryce Harper Video Sent to Problem Gambler

FanDuel, a prominent sports betting platform, is currently embroiled in a lawsuit alleging that it exploited VIP incentives to exacerbate a user’s gambling addiction. Central to the case is a personalized video message from Philadelphia Phillies star and two-time MLB MVP Bryce Harper, sent to Terry Thompson, one of the plaintiffs.

FanDuel assigns VIP managers to cultivate relationships with high-stakes bettors like Thompson, who has wagered $18.5 million with the platform since 2020. The lawsuit claims that Thompson’s gambling led him to take out multiple mortgages, ultimately resulting in the foreclosure of his home and necessitating psychiatric treatment for gambling addiction.

While it’s common for betting companies to offer perks such as Super Bowl tickets to their top customers, the involvement of an active professional athlete like Harper in direct communication with a bettor is unprecedented. In the 21-second video, Harper doesn’t explicitly encourage gambling but mentions that Thompson’s FanDuel host wanted to ensure he had an “extra special Thanksgiving.”

This incident highlights the complex relationship between professional athletes and gambling platforms. MLB players are prohibited from gambling, with recent federal indictments of pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz for allegedly accepting bribes to fix games. Despite these restrictions, MLB maintains partnerships with sportsbooks and prediction markets, and gambling advertisements are prevalent in ballparks and broadcasts.

The lawsuit raises critical questions about the ethical boundaries of marketing strategies employed by gambling companies, especially concerning individuals with known gambling problems. It also underscores the potential conflicts arising from the intersection of professional sports and the rapidly expanding sports betting industry.
