Nintendo to Shut Down ‘Mario Kart Tour’ in September 2026

Nintendo has announced that it will terminate the online service for its mobile game, ‘Mario Kart Tour,’ on September 29, 2026, at 11:00 p.m. Pacific Time. This decision marks the end of the game’s seven-year run since its launch in September 2019.

In preparation for the shutdown, Nintendo has ceased the sale of in-game currency, known as rubies, as of July 7, 2026. Players can continue to use any remaining rubies in the Spotlight Shop, Mii Racing Suit Shop, and Coin Rush until the service concludes. Additionally, all automatic renewals and new subscriptions for the ‘Mario Kart Tour’ Gold Pass have been discontinued. Existing subscribers will retain their benefits until the game’s closure, while non-subscribers will gain free access to Gold Pass features starting August 4, 2026.

Unlike some of Nintendo’s other mobile titles, such as ‘Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp,’ which transitioned to a paid offline version after its online service ended, there are currently no plans to offer an offline version of ‘Mario Kart Tour.’ Consequently, once the servers are shut down, the game will become entirely unplayable.

‘Mario Kart Tour’ was part of Nintendo’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the mobile gaming market. The game introduced unique tracks inspired by real-world cities and incorporated gacha mechanics for character and vehicle acquisition. Despite these innovations, the game faced criticism for its monetization strategies and reliance on an always-online model.

The impending shutdown of ‘Mario Kart Tour’ underscores the challenges Nintendo has encountered in sustaining its mobile gaming ventures. As the company continues to focus on its proprietary hardware and software ecosystem, the future of its mobile gaming initiatives remains uncertain. Players invested in ‘Mario Kart Tour’ should take advantage of the remaining time to enjoy the game before it becomes inaccessible.
