Apple has reintroduced credit and debit card payment options for its App Store and iCloud services in India, marking the end of a four-year suspension. This phased rollout allows users to add eligible Visa and Mastercard cards to their Apple Accounts for subscriptions like iCloud+ and Apple Music, as well as App Store purchases.
The suspension began in May 2022 when Apple halted card payments in response to changes in India’s recurring payments framework. During this period, users relied on alternative methods such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), net banking, and Apple Account balances for their transactions.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced a framework in 2021 that mandated stronger customer authentication for recurring card payments and the adoption of tokenized card credentials. This regulation also prohibited merchants from storing customers’ card details, leading to disruptions in subscription billing for many companies until they updated their payment systems.
Apple has now updated its backend systems to comply with these regulations, enabling the restoration of card payment options. The phased rollout is expected to reach all eligible users over time, with Apple’s support documentation reflecting these changes.
This development underscores the challenges global companies face in adapting to country-specific regulations. Similar adjustments have been necessary for Apple in regions like Europe, Japan, and South Korea, where local laws have influenced aspects of app distribution and payment systems.
Despite the absence of direct card payments, Apple’s services business in India has continued to grow at a double-digit pace. However, reinstating this payment option is crucial as the company’s user base expands and consumers seek multiple payment methods.
The reintroduction of card payments may also reignite discussions about the potential launch of Apple Pay in India. While there have been reports of Apple exploring this possibility, no official plans have been announced.
